The Cut-Outs of Henri Matisse
One of the reasons Matisse is my favorite artist is that he always found ways to make art. Even while ailing in bed, he created works made of painted papers. He cut these papers into shapes and arranged them (with the help of assistants) into compositions. Of his cut-outs Matisse wrote, “The cut-out is what I have found to be the simplest and most direct way of expressing myself.” The National Gallery of Art has a collection of these. So as to protect them from light, viewing hours are limited.
Have fun practicing design and composition. Try to use repetition, variation in size and color, overlapping and positive and negative space. Have fun!!
